Red Wine Liqueur
Christmas Recipes Simple Recipes Beverages
A liqueur for Santa Claus. I hope he likes it, even though it's a more girly liqueur.
I adore it! I discovered it a few years ago in Croatia, but only this year did I manage to get the recipe. I spent 2 days in Varazdin and our host left a bottle of this homemade liqueur on the table, made by her mother. After gathering my courage with a few shots, I asked for the recipe. I'll write to them now at Christmas to thank them and tell them how well mine turned out. The truth is I used premium ingredients: Croatian Teran wine from 2013, Angostura rum aged 5 years, and organic lemon.
Now Christmas can come!
Ingredients
750ml dry red wine
300-350g sugar
1/2 vanilla pod (or 1 packet bourbon vanilla sugar)
zest of 1 small lemon (about 7 strips cut lengthwise)
275ml dark rum (40% alcohol)
How to prepare red wine liqueur
- In a small pot, bring the wine to a boil with the vanilla, half of the lemon zest, and the sugar. After it starts to boil, reduce the heat to simmer gently. Simmer for 30 minutes.
- Remove from heat, add the remaining lemon zest, and cover. Let it cool.
- Remove the lemon and add the rum. Pour into a bottle. Let it rest for 2 days in a cool place, then it can be consumed.
