Recipe: Red Wine Liqueur

A liqueur for Santa Claus. I hope he likes it, even though it's a more girly liqueur.

I adore it! I discovered it a few years ago in Croatia, but only this year did I manage to get the recipe. I spent 2 days in Varazdin and our host left a bottle of this homemade liqueur on the table, made by her mother. After gathering my courage with a few shots, I asked for the recipe. I'll write to them now at Christmas to thank them and tell them how well mine turned out. The truth is I used premium ingredients: Croatian Teran wine from 2013, Angostura rum aged 5 years, and organic lemon.

Now Christmas can come!

Ingredients

750ml dry red wine
300-350g sugar
1/2 vanilla pod (or 1 packet bourbon vanilla sugar)
zest of 1 small lemon (about 7 strips cut lengthwise)
275ml dark rum (40% alcohol)

How to prepare red wine liqueur

  1. In a small pot, bring the wine to a boil with the vanilla, half of the lemon zest, and the sugar. After it starts to boil, reduce the heat to simmer gently. Simmer for 30 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat, add the remaining lemon zest, and cover. Let it cool.
  3. Remove the lemon and add the rum. Pour into a bottle. Let it rest for 2 days in a cool place, then it can be consumed.
