Recipe: Brazilian Chocolate Truffles (Brigadeiro)

Absolutely perfect! Chocolate toffee candies 🤤 ... I didn't think there was a toffee recipe that could be made at home, let alone one so simple and quick. Let's thank the Brazilians who invented this wonder called Brigadeiro (named after Brigadier Eduardo Gomes, a well-known politician and military figure who adored these candies).

For decoration, you can use chocolate flakes which I also used, they're very very good, I highly recommend them, and the candies will look very elegant. If you don't have them, you can use chocolate sprinkles instead.

Ingredients

170g condensed milk
1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa (or chocolate powder)
15g butter (about 1 tablespoon)
2-3 tablespoons chocolate sprinkles or chocolate candies

Pieces: 8

How to prepare brazilian chocolate truffles (brigadeiro)

  1. In a small saucepan, put the condensed milk, cocoa, and butter at room temperature. Mix well until the cocoa is fully incorporated into the mixture.
  2. Put on low heat and cook while stirring constantly for about 5-6 minutes. At first the mixture softens but after about 2 minutes it starts to thicken. You know it's ready when the mixture becomes sticky, clings to the spoon and pulls away from the bottom of the pot (see photo).
  3. Let the mixture cool for about 15 minutes (until it can be shaped by hand without sticking). It will become like caramel (toffee).
  4. With hands lightly greased with a drop of oil (or melted butter), make balls the size of a Raffaello candy. The candies are very shiny.
    * If making for children, the candies should be smaller so they can eat them in one bite
  5. Sprinkle 2-3 tablespoons of chocolate sprinkles on a plate. Roll the balls through this mixture.
    * If you don't have chocolate flakes or sprinkles on hand, you can dust them with cocoa
  6. Place them on a plate or in candy cups and keep in the refrigerator or serve immediately.
