How to Shred Cabbage
A small photo tutorial to help you shred cabbage using a knife.
Although a mandoline slicer like this one is useful for shredding cabbage, you can achieve the same results with a knife if you follow these steps. You'll see how easy it is and how nicely and evenly the cabbage slices this way.
1 cabbage
- To cut cabbage, use a larger knife with a wide blade. Remove the first 2 leaves from the cabbage, they're usually slightly damaged or dirty.
- Place the cabbage on the work surface. Cut into two equal pieces (see photo 2).
- Take each piece and place it with the cut side down. Cut in half widthwise. You'll get four quarters of cabbage (see photos 3 and 4).
- Take each quarter and position it as shown in photo 5, then cut out the hard core (see photos 5 and 6).
- Take each quarter and place it with one cut side down and the other cut side to the right (for right-handers; or left for left-handers; see photo 7).
- Start cutting slices. You'll cut very thin slices if you want finely chopped cabbage or thicker ones if you want it less fine. Continue cutting slices until you finish the whole piece.
- Spread the cut cabbage on the work surface to separate it. Pick out the hard, thick pieces (the tough ribs that have the consistency of the core) and set them aside (they're good for snacking 😉 ).
- Place the shredded cabbage in a bowl and continue with the rest of the pieces. The cabbage is now ready to use in your recipe.
