Popcorn with Furikake
It's Friday and it's Popcorn Day! We need to celebrate tonight, movie+popcorn! All we need is corn kernels, a little oil, salt, and a pot with a lid. Plus bursts of laughter. Yes, they're essential!
When I was little, my grandmother would call us near the stove when she made popcorn and tell us that the kernels only pop if we laugh, and the louder we laugh, the more popcorn we'll have. It was a unique moment, it was magic for us kids to see how the pot fills to the rhythm of our laughter. Even now, after so many years, I follow this ritual and the pot fills up every time.
Enjoy your snacking!
Ingredients
25g popcorn kernels
1 tablespoon furikake
1 tablespoon oil (any kind, I use olive oil)
salt
Servings: 1
How to prepare popcorn with furikake
- You need a pot with a lid large enough for the amount of popcorn you'll be making. For one serving (from about 25g kernels), a small pot of about 20cm is enough.
- Put the pot on heat, add the oil and 2 corn kernels. Put the lid on and set the heat to medium under the pot.
- In a short time, 1-2 minutes, the kernels will pop. At this point, lift the lid and quickly pour in the rest of the kernels and sprinkle with as much salt as you want.
- Put the lid on the pot and start shaking the pot on the burner. Basically shake it with back and forth or side to side movements, whatever is comfortable, just keep it moving so the oil and kernels don't burn. Start laughing, loudly, in bursts - otherwise you'll be left without popcorn.
- In a short time (about 30 seconds) the kernels will start popping. Shake the pot more and more vigorously and increase the volume of your laughter. Stop only when you no longer hear popping from the pot.
- Remove the pot from heat, wait a few seconds to make sure no late kernel pops. Pour the popcorn into a serving bowl and sprinkle with other flavors if desired - this time I added furikake.
- It's best served immediately while still warm.
