What is the advantage of Air Fryer French fries? Less fat, or even none at all. A portion this size fried in an oil bath absorbs up to 3 tablespoons of oil. Here I used only 1 teaspoon. So we can estimate that we reduce the calories by at least 300 kcal. However, note that the calories and carbohydrates from the potatoes themselves are NOT reduced. They remain a side dish with a high glycemic index.
If you don't have an Air Fryer and want to prepare diet "fried" potatoes in the oven, find the recipe here.

How to prepare air fryer french fries
- There are only 2 rules for making French fries in the Air Fryer: choose the right potatoes and don't overfill the Air Fryer basket, because the cooking time will increase, they will cook unevenly and you'll need to stir them often.
- which potatoes to choose: I tested all varieties (low starch, medium starch and high starch) and the high starch ones that I also use for baking and mashing are my favorite: they brown nicely and form a crispy crust, they don't stay soft.
- how many potatoes to add per batch: just enough to have a not very high layer, so you can still see the tray between them; best to check photo number 2 below; in my small Air Fryer with a 6L basket, 2 large or 3-4 smaller potatoes fit; this makes one generous portion or two smaller portions when you also have another side dish or salad with the meal. - The rest of the steps are simple: peel the potatoes and cut them into thin sticks. Season with salt (and other powdered spices if you want: paprika, cumin, etc.).
- Add the oil and mix well so they are evenly coated with seasoning and fat. If you wish, you can skip the oil entirely — the fries will still be crispy and golden, but drier, similar in taste to stovetop roasted potatoes.
- Preheat the Air Fryer to 200°C for 3 minutes, then spread the potatoes in an even layer in the basket. Cook at 180°C for 15-20 minutes (depending on the amount added — fewer will cook faster — and on how thin you cut them). After 10 minutes, stir or shake the basket well. After another 5 minutes, stir again and check how done they are. After the 15 minutes, let them cook just until nicely golden (another 3-5 minutes).
* since Air Fryers vary, you can experiment with 200°C as the cooking temperature — they turn out well that way too, but after many batches mine come out more evenly fried at 180°C - Serve immediately while hot. You can now sprinkle with black pepper or oregano.
Serving suggestion: add a generous handful of arugula on top, drizzle with a little lemon juice and then grate Parmesan over it.
