Recipe: Greek Lemon Chicken with Potatoes

Kotopoulo Lemonato, a simple recipe picked up during my too-short vacation in Greece (Lefkada). An occasion that also led to a useful discovery 😊 You may know that in Greece, wasps on restaurant terraces are a real problem... they appear out of nowhere and swarm greedily around your food. On the first day they caught me by surprise and I started waving my arms around chaotically, ending up with a sting. The terrace owner offered to help me. I accepted, thinking he would apply some cream. But no! He took a device and started applying heat to the area. I thought to myself, not only did I get stung, now I'll have a burn on my arm too. But I couldn't protest, Costas was determined to treat me and my protests were ignored. I want to tell you that after 1 hour, when I left the terrace, my arm was intact: no trace of the sting, no burning sensation, no itching, no swelling. It seems this little device works on a simple principle: heat deactivates and disperses the venom, so all the consequences of stings are neutralized. It also works on mosquito bites.

In conclusion, at the Sea Side restaurant in Geni, I came away with both a good meal and this device that I wouldn't have considered if I hadn't tested it on my own skin. And I also learned not to wave my arms when wasps have their eyes on my food, because I can't win - I have to accept and share. Fortunately, today all the food is mine and I'm only sharing it with you.

Ingredients

500g chicken meat (I used 2 whole leg quarters)
500g potatoes (4-6 potatoes)
1 lemon
30ml extra virgin olive oil
1 level teaspoon dried oregano
2 tablespoons oil
2 large garlic cloves
salt, black pepper

Servings: 2-3

How to prepare greek lemon chicken with potatoes

  1. Wash the meat and dry it well. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  2. Peel the potatoes and cut them lengthwise into 6 wedges. Sprinkle with salt, black pepper, and oregano.
  3. Heat the 2 tablespoons of oil and brown the chicken legs on both sides (about 5 minutes per side). Drain the fat from the pan, leaving only 1 tablespoon. Remove the pan from heat.
  4. Add the crushed garlic and stir for 1 minute, making sure the garlic gets on the meat too.
  5. Transfer all the contents of the pan to a baking dish (20 x 24 cm). Pour the olive oil, lemon juice, and 150ml water into the dish.
  6. Arrange the potatoes around the chicken pieces. Sprinkle a little oregano on the meat as well.
  7. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake at 200°C (390°F) for 25 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and bake for another 20 minutes.
